The World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, was organized in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s landing in America. The fairgrounds, open from May 1, 1893 until October 30, 1893, were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and covered more than 630 acres in Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance. Chicago banker, civic leader and prominent Catholic layman. He was chosen to organize the Catholic Lay Congress in Baltimore in 1889 and proposed an international lay congress to be held in Chicago in conjuction with the Columbian World's Fair Exposition in 1893. Wiliam James Onahan was born in Ireland in 1836. Onahan became a well-known Chicago businessman and civic leader. He wrote for numerous Catholic journals and was chosen to organize the Catholic Lay Congress in Baltimore, Md. in 1889. In September of 1893 he served as secretary of the Committee of Organization at the Columbian Catholic Congress held in Chicago. Onahan died in 1919 in Chicago.
